"A place like this inside a shopping mall? I almost couldn't believe it."

Right in the heart of Gangnam, Seoul, sits Starfield COEX Mall — a destination that the word "shopping mall" simply doesn't do justice to. A complex where retail, culture, food, art, and nature all come together under one roof, it's far more accurately described as a cultural landmark. I'd heard that international tourists never skip it on their Seoul itineraries, and the moment I stepped inside, I understood exactly why.
📚 Starfield Library — A View That Leaves You Speechless
The first thing that stops you in your tracks at Starfield COEX Mall is, without question, Starfield Library (별마당도서관).
Two enormous circular bookshelves soar all the way to the ceiling, with natural light streaming down between them — a sight so striking that even the most seasoned traveler pauses to take it in. The sheer scale of the shelves, packed with tens of thousands of books, is overwhelming in the best possible way. What makes it even more impressive is that you're free to pull any book off the shelf and sit down to read.

During my visit, a special spring exhibition was underway: "Like the First Leaf, Like the First Word." A collaboration between poet Ahn Do-hyun and garden artist Oh Kyung-a, the show wove together flowers, poetry, and illustration throughout the library space, filling the air with the warmth of spring. Visitors lined up for photos in front of an arched transparent display piece, and the colorful floral installations scattered around the floor had become prime spots for Instagram-worthy shots.
Settling into a seat at the Starbucks tucked inside the library and slowly sipping a coffee while taking in the whole panorama — that alone could be the highlight of a Seoul trip. The combination of the scent of books, the aroma of coffee, and the generous open space creates an atmosphere that's genuinely hard to find anywhere else in the world.
🍫 Läderach Chocolate — A Treat for the Eyes and the Palate

Wandering through the shopping floors, I stumbled upon a branch of Swiss chocolatier Läderach — and couldn't walk past it. The display case was lined with layer upon layer of their signature FrischSchoggi chocolate slabs: dark, milk, white, and ruby varieties, each one topped with nuts, dried fruit, or flower petals. The colors and textures alone were enough to make you stop and stare. They make an exceptional gift, and while the price tag is not modest, it's the kind of place that makes walking away empty-handed feel genuinely difficult.
🐠 More to Explore — From the Aquarium to the Exhibition Hall
Starfield COEX Mall is home to hundreds of stores spanning fashion, beauty, lifestyle, dining, and cafés — it truly has something for everyone. Families with children tend to make a beeline for the COEX Aquarium in the basement, where a wide range of marine life can be viewed up close — engaging enough for adults too. Just a short walk away, the COEX Exhibition Hall hosts a rotating calendar of domestic and international shows, so depending on when you visit, you may find a fascinating exhibition to add to your itinerary.
🌿 Nearby — Worth a Stroll After Your Visit
Step outside Starfield and within a short walk you'll encounter another side of Seoul entirely. Bongeunsa Temple, a centuries-old Buddhist temple, sits right next to the COEX complex — offering one of Seoul's most striking contrasts: ancient pagodas and incense smoke against a backdrop of gleaming skyscrapers. A little further on, Apgujeong K-POP Street is a paradise for fans of Korean pop culture, lined with stylish cafés, concept stores, and K-pop merchandise shops. Even if you're not a devoted fan, simply walking the street gives you a vivid sense of where Seoul's contemporary style is heading.
